Denis Coderre was appointed Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada on January 15, 2002.

Mr. Coderre was born in 1963, in the small town of Joliette, Quebec. He received a degree in Political Science from the University of Montreal. He subsequently became a radio host in Montreal, where he discussed current affairs.

He was President of the Quebec wing of the Young Liberals of Canada, and was active in the Liberal party in Quebec. He won his seat in 1997 elections and was re-elected in the 2000.

He has been Chair of the Quebec Liberal Caucus since 1998, and was Co-Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Official Languages.

In the past, Mr. Coderre has mainly been involved in the politics of sports. He was Co-Chair of the Sub-Committee on the Study of Sport in Canada (the Mills Commission), and on August 3, 1999, he was named Secretary of State for Amateur Sport. Since becoming Secretary of State for Amateur Sport, he has strongly supported Paralympic athletes, and has assisted them in obtaining the same rights as other athletes.

In addition, he has been an advocate of better funding of sports in Canada, and has helped in the Canadian budget dedicated to sport has increased by nearly $20 million annually allowing the sport community to have a better environment in which to develop. He has also participated in more than 290 major sporting events.
