Dear Readers:

Recently, confusion arose from the publication of New Star Chinese Weekly advertisements in the November and December 2001 issues of Sing Tao Daily.

On November 24, 2001, we placed an advertisement proudly announcing the expansion of our business. The advertisement was to run for six days. Unfortunately, on November 28 and 29, 2001, Sing Tao Daily substituted this advertisement with a previously published advertisement announcing the first publication of our newspaper. Needless to say, we had many calls from you, our readers and clients, expressing your confusion and dismay.

As we immediately discovered the error and brought the matter to the attention of Mr. Guo(古), Chief Editor, Mr. Tong, Account Manager and Mr. Johnson, Marketing Director of Sing Tao Daily. We requested that they print an acknowledgment of and apology for the error in the next issue of the paper. In reply, Mr. Johnson stated that it is Sing Tao Daily’s policy not to make any corrections or announcements as indicated in the heading of their classified advertising section. He further stated that there was nothing he could do but invite us to send a letter of complaint to the management or legal department. To compensate us, he offered to run the correct advertisement for another two days free of charge. Without our authorization, Sing Tao Daily printed the advertisements on December 5 and 6, 2001 causing only more confusion to our readers and staff. Again, we approached Mr. Johnson to print a correction notice or allow us space in the ad section to publish a correcting advertisement. He would do no such thing and reiterated the policy.

The publishers and staff of this newspaper are not satisfied with the response of Sing Tao Daily. We would like to take this opportunity to advise and ensure our readers that we, the publishers, respect the integrity of our customers and the importance of the advertisements they place in our newspaper. Our policy is quite simple:

“We assume responsibility for our publication and we will run correction notices and provide appropriate compensation in the event that we commit any errors or omissions in the publishing of any advertisement.”

We welcome and honor your readership and business and look forward to serving the community in the coming year.
