Canada’s economy – which has already created a stunning 170,000 new jobs this year – is expected to grow faster than other major Western countries in 2002, the International Monetary Fund says.

The forecast came in the flagship IMF world economic outlook released in Washington. It’s in line with what economists at Canadian banks and investment dealers have been saying lately.
“No matter what statistic you look at … we have never emerged from an economic turndown in such terrific shape,” said David Rosenberg, chief economist and strategist at Merrill Lynch Canada Inc.

The pace of job creation in the first three months of the year is the fastest since 1987 and puts more money into the pockets of more Canadians, noted Marc Levesque, senior economist at TD Bank. “The start to this year is a lot better than even the optimists thought,” added Craig Wright, chief economist at the Royal Bank of Canada.

The IMF forecast that the Canadian economy would grow 2.5 per cent this year and 3.7 per cent next year, slightly ahead of the United States and well in front of the pace expected in Europe.

It’s about time, said Rosenberg, whose own forecast calls for 3 per cent growth in Canada both this year and next.

“Canada was one of the worst performers economically in the 1990s,” he said, given the lingering effects of the early ’90s recession, government spending cuts that slowed growth and then the 1998 financial crisis when Asian economies tanked.

“We’re making up for lost time.”

Global economic growth is expected to be 2.8 per cent this year and 3.6 per cent next year, well ahead of the 2.5 per cent growth worldwide last year, the worst performance since the recession of 1991, said the IMF, which releases its forecasts twice a year.(ROB FERGUSON)
